Upper Valais: New 220 kV switching station in Mörel inaugurated

On Wednesday 20 June 2012, the new 220 kV switching station in Mörel in the upper Valais was officially put into service. The modernisation of the substation, which plays an important role in the Swiss transmission grid, took two years.

An important role in the Swiss transmission grid

In the presence of Ermina Imesch, Mayoress of Mörel, and Christian Brunner, Head of the Alpiq Transmission Systems Business Unit, the 220 kV switching station in Mörel officially went into service on 20 June 2012. Within a period of two years the old switching station, which dates back to the nineteen sixties, was completely rebuilt. Alpiq invested around 21 million Swiss francs in equipping the new plant, which now only requires a space of just 300 square meters compared with the previously required 6000 square meters, with the very latest technology.

The 220 kV switching station in Mörel will play an important role in the Swiss transmission grid. It ensures the supply of electricity in the upper Valais and is the grid feed point for the energy generated by the various power stations in the region. Additionally, it guarantees the transmission grid connection for the Simplon railway line and hence the important connection to Italy.
