Csepel celebrates 20 + 1 years of operation

The Csepel gas-fired combined-cycle power plant is a reliable and flexible producer of power and heat for Hungary's energy system. 1 November 2021 marks 21 years since the plant was commissioned.

The Csepel power plant in Budapest is one of Hungary's most modern and powerful gas-fired combined-cycle power plants. Ever since the plant was commissioned on 1 November 2000, it has been a prime example of a high degree of flexibility and efficiency. It reliably delivers electricity to industrial customers and the Hungarian grid operator as well as heat to around 20,000 households of Budapest’s southern district. With a capacity of 403 MW, Csepel covers around 6 percent of Hungary's electricity consumption, and its high degree of flexibility is helping the country to expand its capacity in renewable energy sources. Csepel has belonged to our international power plant portfolio since 2002.

Alpiq is celebrating the anniversary of commissioning on 4 November 2021 along with partners, customers and employees. The power plant's official anniversary is an important and happy occasion for Alpiq in a success story stretching back over many years. The company would like to thank the employees for ensuring the plant's reliable operation and customers and authorities for many years of professional and cooperative partnership.

Over 20 years ago, the Csepel power plant introduced a modern health and safety system. Safety is given top priority at the facility. Alpiq is proud of the fact that there have been no accidents at Csepel for almost 20 years. The high number of accident-free days reflects the exemplary standard of workplace safety and health protection. In addition to boasting an outstanding safety culture, the gas-fired combined-cycle power plant also committed to transparent environmental reporting back in 2002. This is based on an ISO-certified environmental management system. Since its introduction, Csepel has given an annual account of its relevant activities and reported on their impact in environmental and sustainability reports.
