Alpiq wins contract in connection with modernisation of the Italian railway network

Lausanne – The Italian railway infrastructure manager, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, has awarded Alpiq a contract for the planning and implementation of renewal and optimisation work in the northwest of the country. With this contract worth EUR 27 million, Alpiq is consolidating its position as a European transport technology specialist.

Alpiq will carry out the commissioned renewal and optimisation of substations between 2018 and 2021 and will also lead the consortium with Sifel and Gavazzi Impianti. For Alpiq, the contract is worth EUR 27 million. The “North-West” package includes the Milan, Turin, Verona and Genoa regional districts. It is one of four packages of the national framework agreements for the renewal of substations throughout the national railway network. These framework agreements have a total budget of EUR 240 million and form a part of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana’s investment plan for the period between 2017 and 2021. The goal behind the investment plan is to drive forward the renewal, maintenance and technology upgrade of Italy’s railway lines, and represents one of the Italian government’s transport and infrastructure priorities.

Within the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana’s investment plan, Alpiq already won two major contracts in 2017 relating to the framework agreements for the maintenance of the existing national railway lines. The first contract involved the maintenance of catenary wires, low-voltage grids and safety equipment in tunnels in the Turin and Genoa regions. The second contract covered the maintenance of the power supply systems for the Milan and Verona regions. The total value of the maintenance works awarded to Alpiq amounted to EUR 23 million.

Strong position in the field of railway and transport technology

On the Italian market, Alpiq offers services in the fields of project management, construction and commissioning of turnkey electrification systems for local transport and urban rail systems, as well as for railway technology for high-speed rail lines. The awarding of this follow-up contract in Italy has further consolidated Alpiq’s strong position in the rail and transport technology sector. As a pioneering railway technology specialist, Alpiq covers the entire added value chain and implements projects all around the globe. Alpiq enhanced the geographical diversification of its corporate portfolio with the purchase of the Italian rail and transport technology specialist Balfour Beatty Rail S.p.A. in March 2015, and with the acquisition of the UK specialist for catenary and signal technology, Lundy Projects Ltd., in October 2017.
