Alpiq secures railway technology order for new CEVA train route in Geneva

Zurich – Alpiq is strengthening its strategic position in transport technology with the receipt of a railway technology order in Western Switzerland. As a railway technology specialist, Alpiq will take on the lead role in the construction of the new train connection that runs from Geneva (CH) via Eaux-Vives to Annemasse in France.

From the end of 2016 to the end of 2019, the Alpiq and Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group consortium, under Alpiq’s lead, will equip the 16-kilometre rail route CEVA (Cornavin − Eaux-Vives − Annemasse) with railway technology for the customers SBB and the Canton of Geneva. Upon completion, the new train route will not only relieve traffic congestion in the Geneva region, but will also fill a gap in rail services between Western Switzerland and France. The order value for the consortium amounts to CHF 68 million.

Construction of the railway engineering systems presents special challenges in project management, scheduling, logistics and work safety. Fourteen of the 16 train kilometres are in the city of Geneva. The route runs from the Geneva main train station, Cornavin, past several other train stations, various stopping points, through tunnels and over bridges before reaching its end destination in Annemasse, France. The crossover from the Swiss to the French railway system must be ensured both in terms of logistics as well as technology.

Alpiq will take on the lead role in this pioneering, transport policy project in the general contracting consortium, which is responsible for overall coordination, as well as logistics and construction site organisation. In addition, to project leadership, Alpiq will provide services in overall project management, quality assurance, and the organisation of work safety. Alpiq has also received orders for planning, coordination and installation of the catenary line systems and the low-voltage systems.

After the successful handover of the railway technology system for the Gotthard Base Tunnel in June 2016, Alpiq is once again proving its competence as a transport technology specialist with the follow-up order for the CEVA project, and in doing so, is making an important contribution to the expansion of European railway infrastructure.
